Critical Fire Weather Alerts Issued Across Five States, Including Alaska
US · Published May 12, 2026
The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued 'critical fire weather condition' warnings, also known as red flag warnings, across five states due to a dangerous combination of high winds, low humidity, and unseasonably warm temperatures.
The affected areas include large portions of the Northern Plains—North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, and Montana—as well as Delta Junction in Alaska.
Wind speeds are expected to range from 15 to 35 mph, with gusts reaching up to 50 mph in some locations.

Why It's Important?

The elevated fire risk poses a significant threat to grasslands, rural areas, and wildlife refuges across the affected regions. If a fire ignites, it could spread rapidly and become difficult or impossible to control due to the strong winds and dry conditions. Areas such as the James River Valley in North Dakota, the Badlands in South Dakota, the Sandhills in Nebraska, and regions along Interstate 94 in Montana are particularly vulnerable. In Alaska, Delta Junction faces similar risks. Residents in these areas should remain vigilant as shifting wind directions could lead to unpredictable fire behavior.
